Understanding Common Types of Wine

Learning the basic categories of wine can make your tasting journey even more enjoyable. Here’s a quick guide to what you’ll often find at an Oklahoma wine tasting, including some popular options that we love here at Clauren Ridge:

White Wine

Typically made from green or yellow-skinned grapes, white wines can range from light and crisp to rich and creamy. Depending on the grape and style, you can expect flavors from citrus and green apple to tropical fruit and vanilla.

Red Wine

Made from red or black-skinned grapes, the color and flavors of red wines can vary greatly. Common notes include red or dark berries, cherries, plums, and often secondary notes like spice, leather, or chocolate from aging.

Rosé Wine

This wine gets its pink hue from brief contact with red grape skins. Rosés are often versatile, showcasing refreshing acidity and flavors of red fruit (like strawberries or raspberries), citrus, and an occasional floral or mineral note.

Wine Mimosas

A delightful drink made with fruit juices and wine, perfect for weekend brunches or an Oklahoma wine tasting on a sunny afternoon! At Clauren Ridge, we offer specialty Peach Watermelon, Sweet Wine, Tropical, or “Dry” Mimosas.

Wine Slushies

This fun, frozen treat is perfect for warm Oklahoma days on our patio or veranda! We blend our flavorful signature wines with complementary ingredients to create a smooth, icy, and incredibly refreshing beverage.

The 5 S’s of Oklahoma Wine Tasting

Many professionals and enthusiasts follow a simple yet effective five-step approach to fully appreciate a wine. These “5 S’s” guide you through a sensory journey, helping you deeply engage with each wine so you can identify its unique characteristics:

See: Hold your glass up to observe its color intensity, hue, and clarity. These can give you clues about its age and grape variety, providing hints of its flavor before you even take a sip.

Swirl: Take a few seconds to gently swirl the wine in your glass. This aerates the wine, allowing its aromatic compounds to release. This will significantly enhance the smelling experience.

Smell: Bring the glass to your nose and take a few short, deliberate sniffs. The aromas you identify can give hints about its flavor. Is it fruity, floral, earthy, or spicy? Does it show notes from oak, like vanilla or toast?

Sip: Take a moderate sip and let the wine coat your entire palate. Pay attention to its initial taste, mouthfeel (body), and the interplay of flavors. Make note of its sweetness, dryness, acidity, and (for reds) tannins.

Savor: Focus on the wine’s finish—the sensations and flavors that linger after you have swallowed. A long, pleasant finish is often the mark of a quality wine. Consider your overall impression of the Oklahoma wine tasting experience.

Oklahoma Wine Tasting Terms to Know

As you explore the world of Oklahoma wine tasting, you’ll frequently hear certain terms used to describe each bottle’s characteristics. Understanding these can help you better identify the unique attributes of each glass, so you can truly get to know and articulate your wine preferences.

Dry
This simply means the wine is not sweet. For these wines, most of the grapes’ sugar was converted to alcohol during fermentation.

Sweet
A wine with noticeable sugar content is sweet. The level of sweetness can range significantly.

Off-Dry
Wines with this description have a hint of sweetness; they’re not dry, but they are not fully sweet either.

Body
This refers to the perceived weight and texture of the wine in your mouth. Light-bodied wines feel delicate, like water. Medium-bodied wines have more substance, like whole milk. Full-bodied wines are richer and heavier, like cream.

Acidity
This is the tart, zesty, or crisp quality in a wine that makes your mouth water. Acidity adds freshness and vibrancy and helps a wine pair well with food.

Tannins
These are natural compounds found in grape skins, seeds, and stems (and also in oak barrels) that add structure and complexity to red wines. They create a drying, sometimes puckering sensation, often felt on your gums and tongue.

Finish
This is the overall taste and sensation that lingers in your mouth after you’ve swallowed the wine at your Oklahoma wine tasting. A long, pleasant finish is generally desired.

Aroma
This is the primary scent that comes directly from the grape variety. Aromas may be described as fruity, floral, and herbal.

Bouquet
This often describes the more complex smells that develop through fermentation and aging. The bouquet may be described as oak, spice, or earthy notes.

Earthy
A term used to describe scents or flavors that are similar to minerals, mushrooms, damp soil, or a forest floor.

Fruity
This indicates the presence of fruit notes. For white wines, this might be citrus, green apple, pear, or tropical fruit. For reds, common fruit notes include berries, cherry, or plum.
